India Just Knocked on the Gulf’s Defence Door — and UAE Opened It Wide

India and the UAE held a high-level defence meeting in New Delhi on June 24, 2026. The talks focused on strengthening military cooperation under their Strategic Defence Partnership Framework. Both sides discussed key security issues, defence collaboration, and stronger strategic ties. What was agreed behind closed doors could influence security across the Indo-Gulf region for years to come. And this may be only the beginning.

Who Sat Across the Table?

This was not just another diplomatic meeting. Senior officials from India and the UAE led the talks themselves.

The meeting was co-chaired by Amitabh Prasad, Joint Secretary for International Cooperation in India’s Ministry of Defence, and Brigadier Staff Jamal Ebrahim Mohamed Ebrahim Almar-Zooqi of the UAE Armed Forces. Both sides arrived with a clear agenda and specific goals.

But what happened inside the meeting was far more important than a routine diplomatic discussion. The talks focused on strengthening cooperation and exploring new areas of partnership, signalling that India and the UAE are looking to take their ties to the next level.

One Meeting. Four Decisions.

The discussion focused on expanding defence industry collaboration, fostering innovation, leveraging niche technologies, and enhancing maritime security.

Four key areas were at the centre of the talks:

  • Defence industry cooperation — making defence equipment and systems together.
  • Innovation — working on new and advanced defence technologies.
  • Specialised technologies — exploring high-end technologies that are not often discussed publicly.
  • Maritime security — keeping important sea routes safe, including the Strait of Hormuz.

These are not routine topics. They are areas that can shape security, trade, and strategic ties for years to come.

Why Maritime Security Is the Real Story?

The UAE’s interest was not accidental. It is actively looking for stronger ways to protect its critical infrastructure — and Indian defence systems have emerged as a serious option.

  • BrahMos missile system — known for its speed and precision, making it a powerful deterrent against potential threats.
  • Akashteer air defence system — designed to detect, track, and respond to incoming aerial threats in real time.

The urgency is easy to understand. Earlier this year, the UAE faced thousands of missile and drone attacks linked to the regional conflict involving Iran, leading to major damage and significant economic losses.

As a result, the UAE is now exploring advanced defence solutions to strengthen the security of key assets and vital routes such as the Strait of Hormuz.

And India believes it has exactly the kind of technology the UAE is looking for.

The Moment That Changed Everything

The UAE’s interest in the BrahMos missile did not grow from presentations or brochures. It grew after seeing its performance in a real conflict.

In 2025, India used BrahMos missiles in combat for the first time during Operation Sindoor, a precision strike operation targeting terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan. The operation drew global attention, and many countries closely watched the missile’s performance.

The successful use of BrahMos gave a major boost to India’s defence exports. Several countries that had been observing from a distance began showing interest in the missile system. The UAE was among them.

When a weapon proves its effectiveness on the battlefield, the focus moves beyond technical specifications. The discussion then becomes about proven results and real-world performance.

India’s Defence Exports Are Exploding

This partnership is backed by results, not just discussions. India has already emerged as a major defence exporter.

  • Defence exports — crossed ₹38,000 crore in FY 2025–26, with supplies reaching over 80 countries.
  • BrahMos abroad — the Philippines bought it first, followed by Vietnam in 2026.
  • The UAE factor — the Gulf nation could become India’s first major defence customer in the region.

If that happens, it would be a big breakthrough for India’s defence exports.

A Partnership Years in the Making

The India-UAE defence partnership did not begin overnight. It started with a defence agreement in 2003, followed by a security cooperation pact in 2011. In 2017, India and the UAE upgraded their ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, creating a stronger foundation for closer cooperation. The talks held on June 24 are the latest step in a partnership that has grown steadily over more than two decades.

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said there is already strong defence cooperation between the two countries. Now, that cooperation is moving beyond engagement and taking a more strategic shape. What India and the UAE choose to build together next could have a major impact on security across the region.
