West Bengal Raises Age Limit for Govt Jobs by 5 Years – A Relief for Job Seekers?
In a major boost for job seekers across West Bengal, the BJP government led by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has increased the upper age limit for state government recruitment by five years.
The decision was approved by the state cabinet, and the Finance Department has issued an official notification confirming that the revised age limits came into effect on May 11, 2026.
The move is being seen as one of the most significant recruitment policy changes in the state in recent years, benefiting lakhs of candidates who had crossed the earlier age limit.

New Upper Age Limits for Government Jobs
The revised upper age limits are as follows:
The government has clarified that if a particular post already has a higher age limit under existing rules, that higher limit will continue to apply.
Who Will Benefit?
The revised age criteria will apply to recruitments conducted through the West Bengal Public Service Commission (WBPSC) as well as various state government bodies.
For recruitments outside the Public Service Commission including state undertakings, government companies, statutory bodies, and local self-governing institutions the maximum age limit has been uniformly fixed at 45 years.

This means candidates applying through WBPSC or other state agencies will be eligible under the revised norms.
Why Was the Decision Taken?
According to the government’s press note, the objective is to expand access to public employment opportunities across West Bengal.
The age relaxation is expected to benefit candidates who became overage due to delays in recruitment, examination cancellations, and paper leak controversies in recent years.
The BJP had promised age relaxation of up to five years in its election manifesto, particularly for aspirants affected by recruitment disruptions. The latest decision fulfills that commitment.
The revised age limits have been implemented through amendments to the West Bengal Services (Raising of Age-limit) Rules, 1981, framed under Article 309 of the Constitution of India.

Political Background
The decision comes shortly after the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, in which the BJP secured a decisive mandate by winning 206 seats in the 294-member Assembly.
The Trinamool Congress (TMC), which had won 212 seats in the previous Assembly election, finished second in the latest polls.
The age-limit hike is among the first major employment-focused initiatives announced by the new government.
What This Means for Aspirants?
For thousands of candidates who had become ineligible under the previous age criteria, the new rules offer a fresh opportunity to compete for government jobs.
Eligible aspirants should closely monitor upcoming WBPSC and state department recruitment notifications, which will now follow the revised age limits.
With the new rules already in force, many candidates who previously missed out due to age restrictions can now re-enter the race for government employment.
