Every year, World No Tobacco Day, observed on 31 May, reminds us that tobacco is not just a personal habit. In Bharat, it is a public health challenge that affects families, workplaces, youth, and communities.
This year’s theme, “Unmasking the appeal – countering nicotine and tobacco addiction,” focuses on how tobacco and nicotine products are made attractive, especially for young people, through packaging, flavours, marketing, and misleading perceptions.
For India, the message is urgent and deeply personal: tobacco may look small in daily life, but its impact is massive.

India’s tobacco burden is unique because it is not limited to cigarettes. A large number of people consume tobacco through gutka, khaini, zarda, pan masala with tobacco, bidis, and other smokeless forms. GATS-2 India data reported that 28.6% of adults, or about 266.8 million people, used tobacco in some form in 2016–17.

Why This Matters to Bharat & the World?
Tobacco Use Can Increase Risk Of:
Oral cancer
Lung cancer
Heart disease
Stroke
Chronic lung disease
Gum and dental diseases
Premature death
According to WHO India, tobacco is one of the major causes of death and disease in the country, accounting for nearly 1.35 million deaths every year.
The Human Side of the Crisis
Behind every statistic is a real story.
It may be a daily wage worker who uses khaini to fight fatigue.
A teenager trying tobacco because friends made it look normal.
A parent struggling to quit because the habit has become emotional support.
A family silently suffering because one person’s tobacco use has become everyone’s health risk.
This is why tobacco control cannot be only about warnings. It must also be about awareness, support, counselling, and compassion.
Why Youth Need Special Attention Against Tobacco?
The 2026 theme is especially relevant for young Bharat. Tobacco and nicotine products are often promoted in ways that make them appear stylish, harmless, or stress-relieving. WHO has highlighted how the industry continues to repackage and reinvent products to attract a new generation, particularly children and adolescents.
