The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is moving quickly towards a major achievement. Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi announced that the scheme is expected to cover 75 lakh households by December 2026. Currently, more than 40 lakh homes have already benefited from the rooftop solar initiative.

The announcement came during an event celebrating the completion of two years of the flagship solar programme. The government launched the scheme to help households generate their own electricity through rooftop solar panels and reduce power bills.

What is PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana?

The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is a central government scheme that encourages families to install rooftop solar systems. Through financial assistance and subsidies, the government aims to make solar energy affordable for ordinary households.

The scheme focuses on increasing clean energy adoption while helping families save money on electricity expenses.

Over 40 Lakh Families Have Benefited

According to the government, installations under the scheme have already crossed the 40 lakh mark in just two years. This rapid growth shows strong public interest in solar energy across the country.

Many households have reported lower electricity bills after installing rooftop solar panels. In some cases, families are even generating surplus power that can be supplied back to the grid.

Government Targets 75 Lakh Households

The government now aims to extend the benefits of the scheme to 75 lakh households by the end of 2026. If achieved, this will make PM Surya Ghar one of India’s largest rooftop solar programmes.

Officials believe the target is achievable because demand for renewable energy continues to grow. The government’s subsidy support and simplified application process have also encouraged more families to participate.

Benefits of Rooftop Solar Systems

The scheme offers several advantages to homeowners:

  • Lower monthly electricity bills
  • Reduced dependence on conventional power sources
  • Environment-friendly energy generation
  • Long-term savings on electricity costs
  • Contribution to India’s renewable energy goals

As more households adopt solar power, the country can also reduce carbon emissions and strengthen energy security.

How the Scheme Supports India’s Green Energy Goals

The PM Surya Ghar scheme plays an important role in India’s clean energy transition. The government has been promoting renewable energy projects to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and increase the share of green energy in the power sector.

By expanding rooftop solar installations, India moves closer to its long-term sustainability and climate objectives.

Conclusion

The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana has already transformed millions of households across India. With more than 40 lakh beneficiaries and a target of 75 lakh homes by December 2026, the scheme continues to drive the country’s renewable energy mission forward. If the current pace continues, rooftop solar power could become a common feature in Indian homes over the next few years.
